Gods Lam

For Zakaria (11), son of an Islamic butcher, this year’s Feast of Sacrifice will be the first one without his mother. Things get messed up when his handicapped brother accidentally gets attached to the lamb intended for the same Feast…

Shahine el Hamus, Sabri Saad el Hamus and Soufiane Moussouli are playing the main characters in the movie, which will also be used in Dutch schools with a teaching package on loyalty, surrender and freedom of religion.

Gods Lam (God’s Lamb) is the first fictional film of Kees-Jan Mulder (1986). He graduated earlier as a theologian and made documentaries all over the world. With Gods Lam, he graduated cum laude as a director from the film school of the Utrecht Academy of the Arts (HKU).

Gods Lam is the thesis film of Kees-Jan Mulder (writer and director), Noëmi Vilchez (production), Jasper van Leeningen (d.o.p.), Daisy Kanon (editor), Malcolm Duregger (gaffer), Sam Huisman (sound design), Koert van der Ploeg (grading) and Bas van Diejen (VFX). The Finnish composer Anton Valle wrote and orchestrated the music.

In total, more than twenty students worked a year on the short movie, which celebrates its premiere at the 2013 Dutch Film Festival.

Education

It’s also possible to watch Gods Lam in an educational context: teachers of the School of Education at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam developed a teaching package around the film.

Using the film as a steppingstone, and using various creative methods, the lessons ask questions like: what is actually a sacrifice? What does it mean eating a sacrifice and sharing it? What is actually the difference between the story of Abraham from the Bible and the story from the Koran? And to what extent the government is allowed to interfere with your religious beliefs and practices? Are we able to explain ‘the other’ what’s really important for us?

The film and the teaching package are freely available for high schools, online and on DVD: the film is also subtitled in English, Chinese and French.

Gods Lam in the race for ‘Best Film of Zeeland’

Saturday the 21st of September, Gods Lam will be screened at the International Film Festival Film by the Sea at Vlissingen.
